Brain Tumor Surgery

A brain tumor is not a single disease but a broad group with very different behavior. The right question is not only 'is surgery needed' but 'which tumor, where, and with what biology'. The goal of modern surgery is to remove as much tumor as possible while protecting functions such as speech, movement and vision.

Not every tumor is treated the same

Some tumors (e.g. a symptomatic meningioma, a resectable glioma, a pituitary adenoma) are treated with surgery first; in others biopsy followed by radiotherapy/chemotherapy is more appropriate. For a small asymptomatic meningioma or small acoustic neuroma, surveillance or Gamma Knife may be considered. The decision is always multidisciplinary.

Technology that protects function

High-magnification microscopy, MRI/CT-based neuronavigation, functional MRI and tractography to map motor and language pathways, awake surgery for tumors near functional areas, and fluorescence-guided resection help remove the tumor while protecting healthy brain. Not all are needed in every patient.

Online pre-evaluation before travel

For an international patient, the most costly thing is an unnecessary trip. So the process starts with a remote review of your MRI: you share the images via WhatsApp, and we assess the location, size and relationship to critical structures to give you a realistic picture before you come.

After surgery

Usually a short intensive-care stay is followed by ward monitoring; the further plan (surveillance, radiotherapy or chemotherapy) depends on the tissue type confirmed by pathology. The multidisciplinary team plans the next steps together.

FAQ

Does every brain tumor need surgery?

No. For some tumors surgery is the first choice; others are watched, irradiated, or managed with biopsy and systemic therapy.

What is awake surgery?

For tumors near speech or movement areas, the patient may be partly awakened so function can be monitored while the tumor is removed.

Is Gamma Knife an alternative to surgery?

For selected small or deep lesions radiosurgery may be an alternative; suitability is assessed individually.

How does the process work if I come to Turkey?

You send your MRI on WhatsApp; after a multidisciplinary review, dates, accommodation and the process are planned.
