Cervical Disc Herniation (Neck Hernia) and Its Treatment

A cervical disc herniation occurs when the disc between the vertebrae presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord, causing pain radiating into the arm, numbness and weakness. Not every neck hernia needs surgery — but in the right patient, modern surgery relieves the nerve compression with high safety.

What is a cervical disc herniation?

The disc cushions the vertebrae; when its outer ring tears, the inner core bulges out and presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Pain radiating from the neck into the arm, finger numbness and weakness are typical. Progressive numbness, weakness or gait disturbance requires prompt evaluation.

Non-surgical care first

In international practice the first step is conservative treatment: medication, activity adjustment, physiotherapy and, when needed, nerve root blocks. Most patients improve without surgery. Surgery is considered when symptoms persist after roughly six weeks, or with progressive weakness or signs of spinal cord compression.

Microsurgery, disc replacement or fusion?

Most cases are treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or a motion-preserving disc replacement; in selected cases a posterior or endoscopic approach minimizes tissue damage. The choice depends on the level, hernia type and patient's condition — decided individually with MRI and examination.

Recovery and return to work

Most patients stand up the same or the next day and return to light activity within a few weeks. Exact timing depends on the technique, occupation and general condition; heavy work and long driving resume later on medical advice.

FAQ

Can a neck hernia resolve without surgery?

In many patients symptoms improve with conservative care; surgery is for selected patients.

Disc replacement or fusion — which is better?

Replacement preserves motion at the level; fusion is more stable. The choice is individual to the case.

Is surgery near the spinal cord risky?

It is done under microscope magnification with monitoring; risks are assessed and explained before surgery per case.

How does the process work if I come to Turkey?

You send your MRI images on WhatsApp; after a suitability review, dates, accommodation and the process are planned together.
